I finally got to sample this famous pizza restaurant on my latest trip to Mumbai. I didn’t realize before I dined at Pizza by the Bay that it is part of the Mars Group; a group that owns and operates hotels and restaurants in Mumbai including Waterstones and Eat Around the Corner.
This is very much a landmark location; situated on a busy corner along Marine Drive. A short stroll from the InterContinental Hotel and the popular rooftop bar called Dome, this is the other extreme, bang on a very busy street corner where you can watch the world go by your table. It’s the perfect spot to visit just after a sunset stroll along Marine Drive (as we did) as the nighttime is when Mumbai really comes to life. We sat at our ‘outside’ table watching a little boy sitting on the street playing with a few toys and occasionally asking passers by to purchase them, quite mesmerizing.
I had read that the pizza was good, although a little overpriced for the area. That last statement is rather debatable as there really are such extremes here in Mumbai. When we dined there were quite a few tourists and westerners so maybe the prices are not great for the locals. We did notice two guys that were sitting close to us who managed to share an 8in pizza and a pitcher of water all evening as we tucked into our feast. That aside, what jumped out at me from the menu was the sheer choice of pizza, I was very impressed. Its not just the type of base but also the huge selection of varieties of toppings: Id be hard pressed to find a pizza place in the US or UK who could compete with this menu.
The huge menu has a section called ‘Favorites’ where you will find all the basics such as margarita and Hawaiian etc but also the likes of the Bombay Masala that I was told was a great option, although a little spicy. There is a section called “Quad’ where you can choose a different topping for each quarter. There is stuffed crust pizza, deep pan pizza, and something called The Edge; a thin and crispy base pizza where the toppings go all the way to the edge and it is cut into 16 slices. I actually had a Pizza Diversa, which is kind of like a pizza with a salad in the center and I thought a perfect combination and a hearty portion for one person.
When we arrived our waiter was quick to point out that there was some kind of special going on whereby if you ordered two drinks you got the third free. However, it appeared far more complicated than that as it had to be 3 of the same drink and as my husband wanted to drink beer and me a margarita we were a little stumped. Undeterred, and thankful that we have a driver in Mumbai, we decided to make it a ‘fun’ evening and indulged in quite a lot of alcohol. I had a strawberry, then a peach, and finally a kiwi frozen margarita; not as strong as my Texas drinks but still pretty tasty. David enjoyed a trio of the local favorite, Kingfisher beer.
This restaurant is well worth a visit, both for its location and for its great tasting pizza. Sitting in the outside section there was a lovely breeze and there is constant entertainment watching Mumbaikars going about their business. I hear the lunchtime buffet is a great value option so perhaps my next girlfriends lunch should be here. If you have been, what’s your favorite pizza?
